In this class students read stories and look at pictures
about the life of Minimus the Mouse. Minimus lives in the house of a human family at Vindolanda, a Roman fort lying just to the south of
Hadrian’s Wall in Britain. While reading about Minimus,
students learn all about how Romans and their language, Latin, influenced
English speakers by their presence in Britain for more than 350 years. Students
learn about cultural topics such as food, school, history, geography and
mythology from the point of view of Minimus as he
watches the people interact.
Elementary Latin students at Geneva Academy also have an
introduction to Latin grammar; but unlike the high school students, they will
learn the points which best reinforce what they are learning about literary
English, the English which is foreign to English speakers until they go to
school. Like the high school students, elementary students will learn Latin
words which give us English vocabulary.

In this class students have an introduction to Latin
grammar. The primary objective of grammar instruction is to enable the student
to read Latin literature; but Latin grammar forms the basis for the grammar
every European language; so students also receive an introduction to the
grammar of the Castilian, the Hochdeutch, the Français and every other modern European language.
Vocabulary words are carefully chosen so that whenever students study Latin
vocabulary, they are also building their knowledge of literary English.
In the Fall Semester this is combined with cultural and historical discoveries
made at Pompeii and Herculaneum, the two Roman towns which were frozen in time
on August 24th, 79 A.D. by a volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius. In the Spring
Semester, grammar and vocabulary instruction continues in the context of Alexandria,
Egypt and its combination of Roman government with Greek science and
Near-Eastern religion.
